Robert (Bob) Barrie was
born in Westbrook, Minnesota, August 28th, 1941 where his life in
archery began. In 1954, at the age of 13, he got his first bow. He took
his first deer in 1958 and by 1959, he was making his own
laminated bows.
In 1961, he went to work
for Herter's Inc., Waseca, Minnesota, as general manager of the Archery
Division, designing archery equipment including many innovative bows and
accessories. Herter's was well known as the largest sporting goods mail
order company in the world. They manufactured nearly all of their own
hunting and fishing equipment.
Bob's most
important contribution to archery came in 1979 when he ventured on his
own and started Barrie Archery, manufacturers of the world renowned
Rocky Mt. Broadhead line. It was a family business with his wife Connie,
daughter Janice and son Bruce. For over 25 years the company specialize
in broadheads. Bob retired from Barrie Archery in 1997, but still
remains active by consulting in broadhead design. He still holds a
number of archery patents.
He shot
competitive archery from 1958 through 1978 winning two state
championships, one PAA sectional and placed high in other PAA events.
Even though he enjoyed competitive shooting, bow hunting has always been
number one, he considers himself a bow "huntaholic." All of his big game
animals have been taken exclusively with the bow, including over 20 P&Y
class trophies.
Bob has supported
many archery organizations and has served as a board member of AMO and
is a senior member of the Pope & Young Club.
When not designing broadheads or bowhunting,
there's a good chance you can find this 3 handicap golfer on the golf
course, but archery has and always will be his first love.
